2.1 Speaker System with 2 Digital inputs – 80W (RMS)
The most surprising audio characteristic is the clarity, especially from the satellites. Through the system's range, and almost at any volume level, it maintains a surprising level of detail. Nuances never get lost or fade away. Flourishes such as vocal reverb and snaps such as rim shots push through cleanly and clearly. You can hear strain as you reach max volume, but even then it is acceptable.
Edifier did a solid job matching tweeter to driver. The result is a smooth transition from treble to mid range without any overt confusion or coloration. The satellites are really the system's strong suit.
The satellites are stronger performers than the subwoofer. The box sounds much better than I expected it to, but it cannot match the satellites. Bass comes out forcefully, but it could be more detailed. It was fine with explosions and such, but when I sent it more complex jazz it seemed to loose track of some of the subtler areas. There is, of course, only so much you can expect from such an affordable sub, which is why I didn't see this as a real shortcoming in the system.
Conclusion
If you are a music fan looking for affordability and high sound quality -- and really who isn't looking for this combinations? -- then the S2.1D deserves serious consideration. You get excellent sound quality, first rate build quality, and nice controls for a very attractive price. The value is difficult to overstate. You simply will not find this level of sonic performance at this price with any other speakers.
